What is an air bearing? Can it truly operate with zero friction and wear?

Introduction

In the field of high-precision, cutting-edge manufacturing, bearing performance often determines the upper limit of a machine’s accuracy and its service life. From traditional ball bearings to hydrostatic bearings, each technological advancement has pursued the same goal— Lower friction, higher precision, longer service life 。

Air bearings, also known as gas-floating bearings, represent a milestone breakthrough in this research trajectory. By replacing rolling elements and lubricating oils with an ultra-thin gas film only a few micrometers thick, they enable moving components to operate in a contactless, “levitated” state. In high-end applications such as semiconductor lithography, ultra-precision machining, and aerospace, air bearings have become indispensable core components.

So, how exactly do air bearings work? Can they truly achieve complete frictionlessness and wearlessness? This article will provide an in-depth analysis.

I. The Working Principle of Air Bearings: The Magical Power of an Air Film

Traditional bearings rely on rolling elements or a lubricating oil film to support moving components; no matter how advanced the manufacturing processes become, solid-to-solid contact is always difficult to eliminate entirely. Air bearings, by contrast, take a different approach— A high-pressure gas film completely “lifts” the moving components, achieving true non-contact support. 。

The underlying principle is straightforward: compressed air is throttled and injected into the narrow gap—typically only 5 to 20 micrometers, about one-tenth the diameter of a human hair—between the bearing and the moving component, thereby forming a load-carrying gas film that suspends the moving part in mid-air. This gas film not only provides support but also acts as a “non-contact barrier,” completely eliminating direct friction between solid surfaces.

From a mechanical perspective, the pressure distribution in the gas film automatically adjusts in response to changes in the load: when the load increases and the gas film is compressed, the restrictor modulates the gas flow rate to rapidly restore the film thickness to its equilibrium state, thereby maintaining stable levitation support. This mechanism endows air bearings with exceptional stiffness and stability.

II. Three Major Types: Hydrostatic, Hydrodynamic, and Squeeze-Film Bearings

Based on the different methods of air-film formation, air bearings can be classified into three main categories: Air static-pressure bearings, air dynamic-pressure bearings, and squeeze-film bearings 。

1. Aerostatic bearing—externally pressurized, levitates at zero speed

Air hydrostatic bearings are currently the most widely used type. They require a continuous supply of compressed gas from an external gas supply system; the gas flows through a restrictor into the bearing clearance, forming a hydrostatic air film that supports the load. Their greatest advantage is: A stable air film is established instantaneously upon startup, eliminating the need for speed-dependent operation and thereby avoiding start-stop wear. , suitable for full-load operation across the entire speed range from zero to high speed.

The restrictor is the core component of a hydrostatic bearing and directly determines its performance. Depending on the type of flow restriction, restrictors can be classified as orifice-type, slit-type, surface-type, and porous-media-type. Among these, porous-media restrictor bearings are widely used in precision equipment due to their uniform gas distribution, high load-carrying capacity, and excellent stability.

2. Aerodynamic bearing—self-generated pressure, no external supply required

Air dynamic-pressure bearings, also known as self-acting bearings, operate on the principle of the hydrodynamic effect: when the rotor spins at high speed, a wedge-shaped gap is formed between the two relatively moving surfaces. The viscous gas is entrained into this gap and compressed, thereby generating a dynamic-pressure gas film capable of supporting the rotor. These bearings require no external gas supply and feature a simpler, more compact structure.

Typical hydrodynamic bearing configurations include grooved, tilting-pad, and foil-type designs. Among these, foil gas hydrodynamic bearings utilize an elastic metal foil as the flexible support surface, enabling them to accommodate high-speed operating conditions with dmN values (the product of diameter and rotational speed) reaching several million.

3.挤压 film bearings—vibration generates an air film

Squeeze-film bearings generate load-carrying pressure by squeezing a gas film through high-frequency relative vibration between two surfaces. They are primarily used in specialized applications such as micro-vibration devices, resulting in a relatively narrow range of applications.

Static Pressure vs. Dynamic Pressure: A Summary of the Key Differences

III. Can Frictionless Wear Really Be Achieved? — A In-Depth Analysis from Principle to Practice

Returning to the central question in the title: Can air bearings truly achieve frictionless operation and wear-free performance?

The answer is: Under normal operating conditions, air bearings can indeed achieve zero solid-contact friction, virtually eliminating mechanical wear. However, this conclusion needs to be scrutinized from several perspectives.

First, from the perspective of solid-contact friction, the answer is yes. The core advantage of air bearings lies in the fact that the gas film completely isolates the moving components, eliminating direct contact between solid surfaces. As a result, issues inherent in conventional bearings—such as frictional heat generation, wear, and lubrication failure caused by contact—are fundamentally eliminated. With no mechanical contact, air bearings exhibit a significantly lower coefficient of friction than ball bearings; moreover, static friction is zero at standstill, enabling theoretically infinite-resolution motion control. Consequently, air bearings can achieve rotational accuracy better than 0.1 micrometer, with extremely low spindle positioning errors, and their accuracy remains virtually unchanged over time despite wear.

Secondly, the air film itself exhibits viscous shear friction. Although the viscosity of air is far lower than that of lubricating oil—at room temperature, air viscosity is only one five-thousandth of that of No. 10 mechanical oil—it still exhibits viscous behavior. When moving components operate at high speeds within an air film, viscous shear occurs within the film, resulting in a certain amount of frictional power loss and temperature rise. However, the magnitude of this “fluid friction” is much smaller than that of solid–solid friction and does not cause material wear.

Third, the start-stop phase is a weak link in terms of wear risk. This point needs to be differentiated based on bearing type:

  • Hydrostatic bearing : At the moment of startup, an external gas supply immediately forms a gas film, eliminating solid-to-solid contact throughout the entire speed range—from zero speed to high speed—thus truly achieving “zero start-up and shut-down wear.”
  • Hydrodynamic bearing : At low speeds during the start–stop phase, the hydrodynamic pressure effect is insufficient to generate adequate support, potentially leading to brief contact between the rotor and the bearing inner wall and resulting in frictional wear. To mitigate this issue, researchers typically apply wear-resistant coatings to the foil surfaces.

Fourth, environmental factors are crucial. Air bearings have extremely stringent requirements for the cleanliness and dryness of the supplied air. If the compressed air contains even minute particulates or moisture, it can, at best, clog the restrictors and compromise the uniformity of the gas film; at worst, it can scratch the bearing surfaces, resulting in a loss of precision. Therefore, high-quality air-bearing systems must be equipped with robust filtration and drying units.

Overall, Provided the following conditions are met—clean, dry air supply, an appropriate load range, and stable operating conditions— Air hydrostatic bearings can achieve truly zero solid friction and wear, enabling a “near-permanent” service life design. 。

IV. Performance Overview: Strengths and Limitations

Core Advantages

  • Ultra-high precision : The radial runout can be as low as 0.025 micrometers, and the rotational accuracy is significantly superior to that of conventional bearings.
  • Extremely low friction : No solid contact, extremely low frictional power loss, ultra-high motion resolution, and nanometer-level positioning can be achieved.
  • Ultra-high rotational speed : Rotational speeds can exceed 350,000 rpm, and in some applications even surpass 1,000,000 rpm.
  • Wide temperature range : The applicable temperature range spans from -265°C to 1650°C, with viscosity exhibiting minimal temperature dependence.
  • Clean and environmentally friendly : No lubricating oil is required, eliminating oil-mist contamination, making it particularly suitable for cleanroom environments such as semiconductor, food, and medical applications.
  • Extremely low vibration The “averaging effect” of the air film can absorb surface micro-irregularities, thereby effectively reducing vibration.

Limitations

  • Limited carrying capacity Due to the low viscosity and compressibility of gases, air bearings have a lower load-carrying capacity than fluid-lubricated bearings of the same size.
  • Relatively low stiffness Although advanced designs, such as porous-media throttling, can significantly enhance stiffness—reportedly, a radial air bearing developed in the UK has achieved a stiffness of 876 N/μm—there still remains a gap compared with hydrostatic bearings.
  • Strict gas supply requirements : Clean, dry compressed air is required, and the associated filtration and drying system increases equipment costs.
  • Extremely high manufacturing precision : The bearing clearance is only 5–20 micrometers, the orifice diameter tolerance of the restrictor must be controlled within 0.5 micrometer, and the surface roughness must be no greater than Ra 0.05, making manufacturing highly challenging.

V. Application Domains: From Semiconductors to Aerospace

Air bearings, owing to their unique performance advantages, have already assumed a pivotal role in numerous high-end applications:

Semiconductor manufacturing : Lithography tool stages, wafer inspection equipment, and similar systems demand extremely high motion accuracy and cleanliness; air bearings are the standard configuration for their core motion platforms. Repeatability can reach 0.3 µm over a 300 mm travel range, with accelerations up to 10 G.

Ultra-precision machine tool : Air-static-pressure bearing spindles exhibit exceptionally high rotational accuracy and minimal temperature rise, with small thermal deformation errors, thereby meeting the sub-micron precision requirements of ultra-precision machining.

Aerospace : Foil gas dynamic bearings are widely used in high-speed rotating components such as aircraft air cycle machines (ACMs), demonstrating outstanding performance under extreme operating conditions.

New Energy and AI Computing Power Air bearings have already been deployed in new-energy equipment such as high-speed blowers and hydrogen-fuel-cell air compressors. Of particular note is the emerging trend of AI-server cooling modules based on air-bearing technology, which offer significant advantages including high-efficiency heat exchange, low noise and quiet operation, and green energy efficiency.

Measuring Instruments and Medical Devices : Coordinate measuring machines, precision rotary tables, medical ventilators, and other equipment leverage the frictionless properties of air bearings to achieve ultra-high-precision measurement and clean operation.

VI. Breakthroughs in Domestication: From “Bottleneck” to Independent and Controllable

For a long time, high-end air-bearing technology has been monopolized by a handful of developed countries, making it one of the key technological bottlenecks hindering the development of China’s strategic industries, such as aerospace and semiconductor manufacturing.

It is truly inspiring that in November 2025, China successfully unveiled the world’s first industrialized application of all-active-pressure air bearings, marking a breakthrough in the field of ultra-precision bearings by breaking the long-standing technological blockade imposed by foreign countries and achieving complete domestic self-reliance and large-scale deployment of this “chokepoint” technology. This milestone was attained through 25 years of sustained, collaborative research and development by the Beijing Pujian Air Bearing Application Technology Research Institute in partnership with the Institute of Composite Materials, resulting in end-to-end innovation across key areas such as configuration design, specialized materials development, and micron-level manufacturing processes.

This technology can be widely applied in critical sectors such as aerospace, AI supercomputing centers, semiconductors, high-precision and cutting-edge manufacturing, and new-energy equipment, thereby providing robust support for the localization of core components in China’s high-precision and cutting-edge equipment.

Meanwhile, several companies, including AVIC Huaqiang, have also achieved breakthroughs on dual-platform technologies integrating dynamic-pressure air bearings and magnetic levitation, attaining 100% independent control over design, materials, and manufacturing processes. The rise of domestically developed air-bearing technology is injecting strong momentum into China’s high-end manufacturing sector.

VII. Future Prospects

Driven by continuous breakthroughs in new materials and intelligent technologies, air-bearing technology is advancing toward greater efficiency and intelligence. Future smart adaptive bearings will use sensors to monitor the gas-film condition in real time and dynamically adjust operating parameters to achieve optimal support performance. Against the backdrop of explosive growth in AI computing power and ongoing advancements in semiconductor manufacturing, the market prospects for air bearings are exceptionally promising: projections indicate that the global air-bearing market will expand from approximately US$10.1 billion in 2025 to about US$17.2 billion by 2034.

Conclusion

Air bearings achieve a fundamental leap in motion—from “contact” to “levitation”—by employing an ultra-thin, film-like air cushion. Under normal operating conditions, they truly eliminate solid friction and virtually eliminate wear, thereby providing a revolutionary support solution for the precision manufacturing sector.

Of course, every technology has its limits—air bearings’ stringent requirements for manufacturing precision and air-supply conditions mean their applications are primarily confined to high-end precision equipment. However, as domestic production technologies mature and costs decline, air bearings are transitioning from being a “crown jewel” to broader application scenarios.

Only by fully understanding the capabilities and limitations of air bearings can their technological value be maximized, allowing the “levitation force” to truly drive industrial advancement.
